Is real Italian food what you find on the menu of your favourite UK Italian restaurant?
Italians surely remember this photo taken years ago at Wembley at the Euro Cup final, England vs. Italy (apologies if I bring back painful memories...) and still makes me laugh!
It shows the frustration of Italians living abroad, when looking at "Italian" restaurant menus or talking to the locals about Italian food.
This guy has conveyed the message so smartly that went global!
Just to clarify, this is NOT traditional Italian food:
🍍Pineapple on pizza, enjoy it as a fruit!
🧀 Mac and cheese
the real maccheroni are big pasta tubes
🍝 Fettuccine Alfredo (??)
I have a friend with that name, never mind a pasta sauce
🍗 Chicken on pasta or pizza
avoid to mix pasta and main course in the same plate please...
🍕 Pepperoni pizza
if in the pantry you have a good, local salame, I mean a real delicacy, then you can add some slices! Also, peperoni (one p) are sweet peppers in Italian!
At La Sicilyana bistro, our cute Italian place in the village of Scone in Perthshire, we do our best to educate and displel myths about Italian real cuisine, and customers appreciate that.
We make sure that our guests enjoy real lasagne (no mozzarella or mix cheese, please...), properly cooked pasta al dente, carbonara with authentic guanciale and with no cream and so on...
So, if you go to Italy, avoid asking the above "authentic Italian specialities", and when it comes to coffees, well... this subject is for another post!
