About the Brewery: Birrificio Messina

The story of Birra dello Stretto and its master brewers of Birrificio Messina speaks of resiliance, courage and talent. It all started in 1923 when Birra Messina (not to be confused with the newest Birrificio Messina) was founded by a family of local entrepreneurs who went on to became one of the most popular beers in Italy.

In 1988 the Birra Messina brewery was taken over by Heineken who invested in the brand. In 2007 the Birra Messina factory returned to its original owners, but after a long period of uncertainty the brewery closed in 2011 and all the workers were made redundant.

Mimmo Sorrenti, Birra Messina former master brewer and now the president of Birrificio Messina explains: “My grandfather made beer, my father made beer and I wanted to continue the tradition”. Mimmo, together with 14 other former expert brewers, got together and in April 2013, using their severance pay, the 15 founded a cooperative, starting the production of local quality craft beers under the name of "Birra dello Stretto”.
